Sometimes projects come together naturally, even when they weren't planned. One such project happened this week and you can find the first edition of it in your child's backpack today.
It's our "class newspaper!"
Kids work on all kinds of writing every day during our morning workshop. Kids also have A LOT that they want to tell everyone about at our morning meeting every day. We decided to combine the two and have kids write down what it was that they wanted to share with the class. Of course this generated a variety of pieces from Thanksgiving plans, to how they feel about school, to what their favorite movie is, and on and on.
That's when I thought it might be motivating and rewarding for the kids to put all of their pieces together to make a class "newspaper." So, what you see this week is our first edition. It has just a few "articles," yet I'm sure that after seeing how it turned out there will be many more submissions for next week's issue! Kids will have the opportunity to write something for our class paper each week if they choose. And if they don't choose to write a piece, they will all have the opportunity to write and illustrate a "cover story" on their own copy on Friday before it comes home.
You can help your child get excited about this project by showing him/her a newspaper at home and discussing what kinds of things are in a newspaper. You can also talk about topics/events/news he/she can write about for the class newspaper.
